Different Types of Basement Insulation

Basement wall insulation is a necessity and not just an option. It is a very efficient solution to different problems like mold, cold air leaking into your home and high utility bills.

It can save you about 30% on your energy bills if your basement is insulated. It is performed by installing the insulation on the outside or inside of walls. You can insulate the walls, the ceiling, or both. Most people insulate the ceiling because it has a smaller area than the walls. As an O’Fallon, MO basement contractor, here is my advise.

Blanket Basement Ceiling Insulation

Depending on individual preference and climate, there are different options available. Blanket basement ceiling insulation is one of the options. It makes use of either cotton blankets or fiberglass blanket sheets for insulation. Some advantages of this kind of insulation are its wider coverage, low cost and simplicity. The con with this basement insulation type is that it only provides limited thermal transfer.

Loose Fill Ceiling Insulation

This is another type of basement insulation and it uses mineral, cellulose wool or fibreglass, which are produced from recycled materials. It is even more effective and cheaper. However, the costs may increase if there are big gaps and void as they must be totally sealed for the insulation to be effective.

Spray Foam Insulation

This insulation is great for basements that have been built completely and do not need further renovation work. It is a very expensive type of insulation. Some insulation products in liquid form contain types of polyisocyanurate or polyurethane substances, which along with the foaming agents are sprayed on the basement walls.

Concrete Block Insulation

This is another insulation method. The concrete blocks are constructed from polystyrene or polyurethane. Their hollows are filled with perlite pellets or foams. This kind of nsulation is a good choice for new constructions because it requires a lot of work by the mason. The disadvantage of this insulation is that it is less effective when compared to others.

Foam Boards

It is also possible to insulate basements with foam boards. They help in decreasing heat flow. These foam boards are fire-resistant. However, they must be covered with a fire barrier whenever they are being used because they emit noxious gases if ignited.

When a basement walls or ceiling have been insulated effectively, it has a lot of the advantages. Insulated basements means more heat inside the home while cold air is kept from coming in. It will also mean healthier air quality that is not tainted by mildew or mold.
